Masters of the Veil by Daniel A. Cohen

"Life can’t get much better for Sam Lock. Popular, good-looking, and with a future as a professional football player… every guy at Stanton High School wishes he were Sam. That is, until his championship football game, when Sam accidentally links with an ancient source of energy known as the Veil and reveals his potential to become a powerful sorcerer.

Sam’s dreams are crushed as he is whisked off to Atlas Crown, a community of sorcerers who utilize the Veil as a part of everyday life. Once there, he trains beside a mute boy who speaks through music, an eternal sage who is the eyes and ears of the Veil, and a beautiful girl who's pretty sure Sam's an idiot.

As it becomes clear that Sam is meant for power magic—the most feared and misunderstood form of sorcery—people beyond Atlas Crown learn of his dangerous potential. An exiled group of power sorcerers are eager to recruit Sam, believing that he is destined to help them achieve their long-held goal. If they succeed, they could bring about the downfall of not only Atlas Crown… but all of humankind. "

My review:

First I would like to mention how handsome Mr. Daniel Cohen is...completely off topic, but nonetheless important. Lol Next, I would like to mention that not only did I get to meet him in person, but I was blessed with the luck of getting a signed copy (hence the gloating pictures ;P)
Now to the review of the book:

Daniel Cohen has successfully accomplished creating a new and inventive story that captured my attention to the point of involuntary reflection. I found myself thinking of and analyzing the story that gripped my mind!!! It was well written and immensely relatable. I loved damn near every character, and found myself disappointed when I reached the end of the story. :)
Daniel told me that his intention of creating a character that (contrary to most novels of self realization and mysticism) was happy and popular before finding out he was meant for so much more, was his way of telling this familiar story of worth but through a different source. He completely nailed the character and was true to his word about spinning the tale in a different form. I hated Sam, I loved Sam. I pittied him, and then I showed him no remorse. In other words, he was real. Im glad to have met him, and I eagerly await the next piece of the story. :)

I would indefinitely recommend this book to friends and foes alike!! Daniel is an author to be reckoned with. And I'm not saying that just cuz he's a hottie ;)

  2. Wow. Thank you so much for the kind words (I'm very much blushing right now). I never thought a trilogy would be so mind-bogglingly improbable to write, and it's reviews like this that give me the strength and courage to keep writing. Thank you Jocelyn, I really mean it :)

Oh, and btw. I finished the first draft of "Children of the Veil" and in my opinion it's even better than the first. Keep in touch!
